Report: US official: Russia unable to complete Nord Stream 2

MOSCOW, Feb 17 (PRIME) -- Russia will be unable to complete the Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline to Europe, U.S. Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told Bloomberg on February 15.

“It’s going to be a very long delay, because Russia doesn’t have the technology,” he said.

Earlier in February, Russian gas giant Gazprom said in a presentation that it planned to launch the Nord Stream-2 pipeline at the end of 2020.

In December 2019, the builder of the Nord Stream-2 suspended operations due to the threat of U.S. sanctions after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a defense budget envisaging spending on counteraction against Russia in various areas including sanctions against the Nord Stream-2.

The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Gazprom is implementing the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie.
